Off-Grid FAQ's

What you should know about Off-Grid Solar

What is off-grid solar?

Off-Grid Solar is a solar system that is not connected to the national electricity grid. The main source of energy for these systems comes from the sun via the solar panels. The energy is used to power appliances directly and charge batteries to supply power overnight. These systems can also have a backup generator for times of prolonged low sunlight or extra high power demands.

Why go off-grid? What are the benefits?

There are many benefits to off-grid solar. These include:

  • Very reliable power supply
  • Avoid the Infrastructure costs from Ergon and Energex, usually start around $50,000.00.
  • Being self sufficient, not having to rely on other people or the energy companies
  • Low cost power
  • No power lines disrupting your view of the bush

Who should consider off-grid solar?

If you are building a new home or other structure that requires power on an acreage block it would definitely be worth considering an off-grid solar system to avoid the infrastructure costs from Ergon and Energex, usually starting from $50,000.

If you are currently using petrol or diesel generators to power your home or business, updating to a solar system could save time money and the environment. We can also automate an existing diesel powered site to reduce run times for peak load only.

What size system would I need?

You will need to calculate the amount of energy that you expect to use by calculating how much each appliance will draw on the system.

We have two useful resources to help you understand what size system you would need. We have a spreadsheet to calculate the amount of power used and therefore what size system would be needed. We also have an information sheet with the estimated usage of different appliances and some information to assist calculation.
